An Unlazy Saturday

Last Saturday turned out to be quite eventful for me. It began with a 16 mile training run in preparation for the upcoming New York City Marathon. Upon finishing I got some news that my girlfriend was proposed to the night before. An immediate celebration was in order. I already had my sights set on a visit to the Brooklyn Flea that afternoon and it so happens that my friend lives two blocks away. After a nap and much needed replenishment I set my sights on Fort Greene, Brooklyn with my favorite tote, a bottle of chilled champagne (already in my refrigerator as I always stock to prepare for any unforseen celebrations) and my camera.

As mentioned in a previous post, this is the girlfriend that is moving to Switzerland in October. She and her significant other were having a stoop sale to clean house before the move.

I snagged a Marc Jacobs dress I hope to debut later on my blog. It’s the colorful one above on the right.

The fancy ring with a vintage touch. It’s special as it was her Grandmother’s ring which was passed down.

I excused myself and ventured over to the Brooklyn Flea Market.

What better way to cool off on a hot summer day…

This little stand caught my eye and apparently I wasn’t the only one. They use fresh local fruit to make their popsicles as well as shaved ice. I tried the Apricot and Lavender pop. It was sensational.

I snapped some photos to document the town on my way back to the apartment.

Yet another stoop sale. These are quite popular in this neck of the woods.

Arriving back to the newly engaged couple, a champagne toast ensued among friends followed by the remainder of a perfect afternoon day on a stoop laughing and smiling with pals.

Day Trip To DUMBO

DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It’s an area consisting of factories, warehouses and dock storehouses most of which have been transformed into trendy shops, dazzling apartment lofts and great food stomping grounds. Let’s not forget the stunning views of Manhattan. I ventured off here recently to capture the moment.

This pizza shop has been on my radar as it’s known as being one of the “best” spots to get pizza in New York. I was excited to finally be in the area and sample. I would even eat dairy for the sake of trying this pizza. Much to my surprise I saw a sign that read NO SLICES. I couldn’t believe my eyes. No slices? What if you are a solo passerby and want to stop in to feed yourself. One is to purchase an entire pie, I think not? Low and behold I went on without my famous slice of Grimaldi’s pizza.

What I forgot to mention was the massive line of folks waiting for their very own taste.

I’ve always wanted to try this place above, Pedro’s. I’m a sucker for a fun, festive Mexican joint.

A light mid-afternoon snack kept me fueled. I stopped at a local organic market shown below.

Cupcakes…Smile

Today my day began with a Green Monster.

1/2 banana, handful of fresh spinach leaves, 1 scoop organic wheat grass powder and some almond milk.

This smoothie always gives me a boost of energy in the morning and it’s a great way to start the day. I’ve been incorporating wheat grass into my diet due to the some of the following positive benefits:

  • Increases and sustains energy naturally
  • Detoxifies and cleanses the body
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Complete food with enzymes and all essential amino acids
  • Natural source of antioxidants to help repair damaged cells

Last night I met up with two friends and it was really great to see them. I left with a smile on my face as I adore the comfort of good ol’ friends. One of them I hadn’t seen in quite some time and when we called him he came out within seconds to see us. We were sitting outside at a place down the street from his apartment. It was a must that we saw him. The room is full of laughs when he is around. The other has some huge life changes ahead of her. She is moving to Switzerland with her boyfriend in October. She has been a dear friend for ten years now. I don’t think it has hit me yet that she is leaving town.

So when I arrived home I felt the need for a celebration and what better way to celebrate then to make cupcakes. I have had my eye on a vegan cupcake recipe from The Kind Diet, Alicia Silverstone’s favorite cupcake recipe. When I checked my cupboards I found I had most of the ingredients. I have been down the vegan cupcake route before testing out recipes from the Babycakes cookbook. So I stepped out to the market to pick up the remaining ingredients and was soon back in the kitchen, my very tiny city kitchen.

By the way, the frosting was a hit in my book. Adding the soy milk powder gave it a malt consistency. It brought me back to the days of summer when I was little and my parents, grandparents and I would head over to a old-fashioned ice cream parlor in town called Richmond’s. It was the town icon from the 1960′s through the 1980′s. My Mom and I would always order the “Malty Ball Sundae.” Ahhh….dreamy.

Recipe, Makes 12

Cupcakes

  • 2/3 cup hemp or soy milk
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2/3 cup agave nectar
  • 1/3 cup safflower oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of fine sea salt

Fudge Frosting

  • 1/2 cup Earth Balance butter
  • 1/2 cup agave nectar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup soy milk powder

Preheat over to 325. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners. (Alicia suggests unbleached, recycled cupcake liners by a company called If You Care, available at Whole Foods.)

Combine the milk and vinegar in a medium bowl, and set aside for at least 5 minutes or until it bubbles a little. If it doesn’t bubble, keep stirring the mixture until it does. Add the agave nectar, oil, and vanilla and stir.

In a separate bowl, combine the flours, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, mixing until no lumps remain.

Pour the batter into the prepared muffin tin, and bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of one cupcake comes out clean and the tops are slightly springy when pressed. Cool the cupcakes in the pan for 10 to 15 minutes, then cool completely on a baking rack before frosting.

To make the Fudge Frosting, use a mixer to cream the butter together with the agave nectar in a mixing bowl until very smooth. Add the vanilla extract and about half the cocoa powder, mix on low speed to combine, then add the remaining cocoa powder. Add in the soy milk powder, and beat at medium-high speed until fluffy. If it is runny, refrigerate the frosting until it sets up a little.

To note, I didn’t have a mixer so I mixed by hand and I did put the frosting in the refrigerator to keep it from being a runny consistency.

Working 9 to 5

I went for a 4 mile run this afternoon in and around Central Park. The weather was perfect. The park was extremely crowded. I would expect this in the morning or the evening when I am usually over there around my work hours but it was just as packed in the afternoon. I do appreciate that it is still August and there are many tourists visiting the city this month. And of course those that have the pleasure of not working a 9 to 5 job. It’s possible I ran past some full-time writers out there. The park is such a nice escape from the city within the city. It recharged my batteries for sure. I’ll be back this coming Saturday morning for an organized New York City Marathon long training run.

After my run lunch consisted of leftover dinner.

Fresh spinach leaves with tomato, chopped carrots and green olives topped with organic italian dressing.

Sun-dried tomato couscous with grilled brussels sprouts. I reheated this dish with added garlic and olive oil.

I picked up a copy of Shape Magazine today due to the fact that Kristen Bell is on the cover. I have taking a liking to this actress. I fell in love with her while watching Forgetting Sarah Marshall. It’s possibly one of the funniest movies I have seen. And recently I viewed a few episodes of Veronica Mars on instant Netflix. Though it may seem it’s a bit high school I shamelessly admit to having watched it. In this issue Kristen lists her 30 Rules To Live By and as you may know I am a sucker for a list. It’s a fun read if you wish.

Oh Pressure

Yesterday I seemed to be filled with an abnormal amount of self-deprecating pressure which I’m finding to be completely unnecessary. We all know I enjoy writing about my goals and going after what I want in life but sometimes I need to distinguish what is truly making me happy from what is more of a nuisance to me. I prefer my life to be filled with things I look forward to and want to be doing, not those that don’t bring a smile to my face. I came across this post from Stephanie Klein that made me feel better about this topic and reminded me I am only human.

Not so long ago I became better about using the word no. There was a point in life that I felt so badly about ever saying no to certain invitations. I kept my plate bursting with plans that weren’t a priority on my list because I felt it was the right thing or something I should be doing. I was trying to be the best person I could be to everyone in my life. I soon realized that this left me resentful and not able to find time for me. I don’t need to feel guilty about not going somewhere if I prefer to be doing something else or in fact if I prefer to be doing nothing at all.

Regarding yesterday, I found myself putting pressure on what I need to do for the remainder of my staycation. The nerve of myself! There is something wrong with this picture. It’s my time away from my everyday busy schedule and I wanted to be able to relax and do what I feel at that moment. Of course my mind was filled with all of the errands that need to be accomplished and closets that should be organized. And I make the mistake of telling people in my life about these things and later they ask me if I had gotten around to the chores and I say no and I’m left feeling guilty. It’s a vicious cycle. One I brought on all by myself. Silly, isn’t it?

So the day ended with me doing a quick straightening up around the apartment and making myself a nice dinner with a glass of wine from a bottle I acquired during a visit to the Long Island Wineries back in June. I watched Lipstick Jungle on Netflix. Lindsay Price plays my favorite character. She has sass. There is something within her personality I can relate to. And I love her style. It’s disappointing that the show went off the air after only two seasons.

As I sit here finalizing this blog post I’m having my morning cup of coffee and just finished a hearty bowl of oats. I’m going to enjoy this day and see where it leads me. I already know it will end at The Plaza tonight where I will join two girlfriends for a drink. Now this I can live with.

The Beverly Road Project: Update Four

Greetings! I’m on vacation this week, well more like a “staycation” as I am local. I feel ecstatic as I am emulating the life of a full-time writer and not the gal that must venture into an office each morning.

From my list of goals this past week, one of them included meeting a published author. And that I did. Days ago it happened to catch my eye that Lauren Weisberger (many of you may know her as the author of The Devil Wears Prada) was going to be doing a book signing/reading at a Barnes & Noble here in Manhattan. I marked it on my calendar. This was the first time I ever attended such an event and thought it would be great for me for many reasons such as 1. Networking 2. Meet someone who is doing what I ultimately want to be doing 3. Inspiration for me.

I was tired and run down when the actual day rolled around and contemplated even going to this event after all. I was on the phone with one of my girlfriends while still at work in the early evening and she talked some sense into me as she usually does. And off I went. The event was short and sweet, under an hour. Upon arrival, I made my way to the event room and purchased Lauren’s new book, Last Night At Chateau Marmont then took a seat in the first row. I have been this way all of my life. I must be up front among all of the action. I settled in and browsed through my book while I awaited Lauren’s debut. Soon after 7:00pm someone from Barnes & Noble came to the podium to introduce Lauren to the very crowded room of fans who awaited her arrival. She graciously came out and spoke a few words. Immediately one got the sense that she is completely down to earth and witty. She read a small passage from her new book and then began to take questions from the audience. She made it a point to tell us that she “bribed” friends and family to come out and fill the room. Her Mom was sitting in the first row with such a proud smile on her face. It was sweet to observe. After the Q & A wrapped, we were able to form a line for the actual book signing. When my turn came, I told Lauren she is an inspiration to me and that I am working toward becoming a full-time writer. She was honest and told me it is a tough road but doable and I am on the right track due to the industry I’m currently working in and the people surrounding me. I came home and researched where she got her start which was a workshop here in the city. This was where The Devil Wears Prada was born.
